Vasiliki E. Kalodimou MSc, Ph.D. is the lab director of the Flow Cytometry-Research and Regenerative Medicine Department at IASO Hospital in Athens, Greece. She has studied and worked with progenitor cells from placenta, umbilical cord, and adipose tissue along with their applications in regenerative medicine and flow cytometry, with publications in the field, including research fellowships. She has published 2 books about flow cytometry, the Greek edition was published in 2010 and in 2013 the book was published from AABB Press USA and was placed as student reference material in Stanford University library, USA. A Bestseller. Her new book: A Handbook to Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine was published this year by Speg. Co. Frank Yurasek completed his PhD in Traditional Chinese Medicine at Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, PRC, and his MSOM at Midwest College of Oriental Medicine, Chicago. In addition to being in Practice since 1985, he is past Chair of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at National University of Health Sciences, and Professor of Tuina at Midwest College of Oriental Medicine. He has presented Posters on Acupuncture at several Society of Acupuncture Research Conferences in the U.S. and China, as well as the World Federation of Society of Acupuncture Conferences in Houston, Texas and Toronto, Canada, as well as The Midwest Pain Medicine Society. He was appointed Vice President of WFAS in Beijing in 2014. Dr. Yurasek is Director of Acupuncture for Cook County Health & Hospital Systems, Stroger Hospital Pain Clinic. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Notre Dame University, where he also taught for several years.

Rong Peijing is a professor and an academic leader of acupuncture in China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (CACMS). Her research interests are involved in mechanisms underlying acupuncture and the therapeutic effects of acupuncture. She has made series studies of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation on depression, epilepsy, diabetes, insomnia, and the invention of acupuncture instruments. The research team investigated that the mechanism of auricular acupuncture is the correlation between auricular and the vagus nerve. Currently she is the Associate Director of the Committee of Auricular Acupuncture and the secretary general of the Academic Committee of China Association of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (CAAM). She’s got the financial supports from the International Association on the study of Pain (IASP), the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) and the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO). She was awarded the Distinguished Young Investigator by the Federation of the Asian and Oceania Physiological Societies (FAOPS). She’s served more than 20 international conferences as a chair/pc member and offered about 10 keynotes/talks in high ranking conferences or universities, and has also served as editor/guest editor in about 10 peer reviewed journals in professional science. So far, she has published more than 100 academic papers, including Biological Psychiatry, PLoS One，et al. SCI journals. She has won 7 Scientific Awards of the Provincial and Ministerial-level.

Zhang-Jin Zhang is a Professor and an Associate Director (Clinical Affairs) of the School of Chinese Medicine of the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He received his Chinese medicine and Western medicine training and earned his Ph.D. in neuroscience in China. During 1994-2006, He continued his research work in psychopharmacology and clinical psychiatry at Vanderbilt University and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in USA. His long-term research interest focuses on developing effective treatment strategies from herbal medicine and acupuncture for neuropsychiatric disorder, including depression, anxiety, dementia, and schizophrenia. He has authored over 90 research papers and 7 book chapters and delivered numerous seminars introducing herbal medicine and acupuncture for mental health and wellbeing. he has active clinical practice in Hong Kong with specialty in the use of acupuncture and Chinese medicine for neuropsychiatric problems.

Traditional medicine

Ron Riso's background includes biomedical engineering and neuroscience. He joined the Biomechatronics group in September 2011 to lead a project that aims to develop implantable devices that provide for bi-directional communication with peripheral nerves. Dr. Riso initially worked with FES grasp restoration for spinal injured subjects at Case Western Reserve University for more than a decade to develop a tactile feedback system for a hand neuroprosthesis. From 1995 until 2003, Ron was Associate Professor at the Danish University, where he continued to work on developing nerve cuff technology to activate otherwise paralyzed muscles in quadriplegia and recorded afferent activity for closed-loop grasp control. While working abroad, Ron was a co-investigator in several large consortium EU funded projects dedicated to spinal cord trauma rehabilitation (“GRIP”) and advanced powered prostheses (“Cyberhand”). As a guest researcher at Professor Roland Johansson’s lab in the Department of Physiology in Umea, Sweden, he studied microneurography and the physiology and psychophysics of cutaneous and proprioceptive sensibilities. Ron's present research at the Biomechatronics Neural Interfaces Lab involves developing and testing micro-channel nerve regeneration array devices as well as nerve- muscle-graft approaches to obtain prosthesis control commands and to provide prosthesis users with tactile and proprioceptive sensibilities from their powered artificial limbs.
