Biography

Dr. Penafrancia Cano is an Associate Professor of the Department of Anesthesiology and the Head of the Section of Orthopedic Anesthesia at the Universtiy of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital. She is also a Consultant of the Department of Anesthesiology at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center and San Juan de Dios Hospital. She is a member of the Board Directors and the Chair of the CME Committee of the Philippinne Society of Anesthesiologists. She is formerly an Associate Professor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the same University and she is also the former Section Head of Ambulatory Anesthesia at the Philippine General Hospital. She underwent a fellowship in Molecular Biology at the Kobe University School of Medicine in Japan and later, a fellowship training in Liver and Kidney Transplant Anesthesia at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms University in Bonn, Germany. Her quest for further knowledge did not stop there. Because of her special interest in Regional Anesthesia, she attended numerous international regional anesthesia conferences and workshops. She also went through a number of preceptorship programs in different acclaimed institutions in the United States and Europe. She holds a European Diploma in Regional Anesthesia (EDRA). Dr. Cano is one of the pioneers of Ultrasound Guided Nerve Blocks in the Philippines. She has spearheaded and directed several conferences and workshops all over the country and she is a respected speaker both locally and internationally. She has been invited as a speaker in the AOSRA, Indonesian Society of Anesthesia, Asean Congress of Anesthesia (ACA), RA-Asia, Japan Society for Clinical Anesthesia and the World Congress of Regional Anesthesia (WCRAPT). She has worked with NYSORA-Asia and NWAC in Rome, Thailand and Austria. She is a Co-Director of the NYSORA-Asia which was held in Manila last 2013. She is also one of the co-founders of RA-Asia.
